Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations around Berkshire.

New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Berkshire Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session.

Our classes and photography sessions are limited to a max of 5 students - due to current COVID restrictions

We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you're sick.
Keep 2 metres away from others.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others. Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses.
Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitiser.

Outdoor Portraits and Fill-in Flash Photography Meetup - Burnham Beeches - 10am - 2 hours
So, as someone with a DSLR handy, and a good eye, you will probably be asked to shoot photos of people.
We will start by talking about the focal distances of the various lenses for this type of photography, then without the flash, looking at manual settings (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) as a start. We will try out 3 different approaches.

Then, it's time to talk about you about using fill-in flash. Like your camera, there might be hundreds of signs, symbols and settings that are confusing. Not to mention the reasons for even using flash in decent light.
Hopefully, some mysteries will be solved, and any fear evaporated by the end of the session. Plenty of professional photographers swear by outdoor flash, as is gives consistent results, which is essential for capturing the moment.

Black & White Photography Meetup - Windsor Castle - 10am - 2 hours
We will literally be looking at things in a different way. This session will concentrate on looking at tones, light & shade, contrast, and how it is essential for composition, impact and how it improves your photography in general.

We will start off with some useful camera settings, which will help us compare our images.
Then, we will have three different challenges to focus on (pun intended) and look at your camera's in-built filter effects, if it has them, to show how they effect contrast. We should still have time to compare our B&W shots with our colour ones.
Since we will be next to Windsor Castle, there won't be a shortage of visual material to practice on.
We will round off with some ideas about how to develop (another intended pun) the images in "post production" for when you get home.

Manual Mode Class - The Brocas, Eton - 10am - 3
During this 3hour class, we will be exclusively looking at Manual Mode, as we simplify our approach, and literally "take control" of the camera settings.
We'll be answering questions about why and when to use this mode and why it is useful to improve your images. I'll explain the other relevant topics related to Manual Mode such as:
Aperture
Shutter Speed
ISO setting
how to use the camera's light meter
(light) metering modes (matrix, centre-weighted, spot),
-/ exposure compensation,
colour temperatures (daylight, shade, various artificial lights)

But most of all we are going to enjoy some practical "back to basics" camera settings from myself who "grew up" on manual cameras (35mm SLR)

Landscape Photography meetup - Cock Marsh - 10am - 2hours
On your travels, with a camera, you will no doubt be inspired or connected somehow to your location, or landscape. You might even have seen internet images and either thought "I can't possibly take pictures as good as that." or "I could take better pictures of that location, since I know it, but how?"

In this session, we will practically investigate different focal lengths (lenses) settings (aperture & shutter speeds) additional equipment (optional tripod) and even fill-in flash if required. Our pictures will start to tell better "stories" about how the land is used, or has changed, or even how people use it for leisure. This location has it all, even a Bronze-Age burial mound.

Landscape photography isn't just for National Geographic magazines and the like. You can use the skills we'll learn for web images, holiday memories, eco stories, landscape documentaries and much much more.

Many people find that going out and taking photographs of landscapes, very relaxing and mindful, completely absorbed in the moment.

Christmas Lights, Night Photography Walk - Windsor - 4pm - 2hours
It will have just got dark, and artificial street lights and flood lights will be illuminating the castle as we convene by the historic walls and Statue. I will explain the first task of the evening, and suggest some ideas before walk down Peascod Street, stopping near the bottom for some great views. Proceeding to our next locations on a mini photo walking tour past some famous and historic buildings and viewpoints. We will get as far as Eton, across the bridge for some more challenges, and finish our session underneath a life size model of a Hawker Hurricane from World War 2.
